Special Choice
Tri-Fold: New Perspectives on Book Arts at the Williamsburg Art & Historical Center in Brooklyn just closed on Saturday. Three different curators had selected pieces related to book arts for that show, including my Handbook. The show was very well attended and I was happy to hear that Yuko Nii, the curator who had chosen my piece, had decided to extend her portion of the exhibition with new selections added as well.
Special Choice: Book Arts Part 1 & 2 will run at the Williamsburg Art & Historical Center from December 4, 2010 to January 9, 2011. If you are in NYC during the run of the show I hope you will stop by and visit.

Tri-Fold
I am happy to share with you that Handbook will be exhibited at the Williamsburg Art & Historical Center in Brooklyn as part of the show Tri-Fold: New Perspectives on Book Arts. This handmade book is very special to me and I am thrilled to have this opportunity to have it on exhibit.
The opening reception will be held on Tuesday October 12 from 6-8pm. The show runs through November 27. If you live nearby, I invite you to stop by the center at anytime. For those of you far away, I will post about the opening next week.
The Williamsburg Art & Historical Center is located in Williamsburg, a Brooklyn neighborhood that in recent years has become a magnet for indie culture and the art community. The center is housed in a landmark building built in 1867 at 135 Broadway. Exhibition hours are Wednesday to Friday 1–5 pm and Saturday and Sunday Noon–6 pm

I Have Been Thinking About...
From a post dated April 27, 2008:
I have been thinking about…hands. The importance of hands. The utility of hands. The beauty of hands. The meaning of hands. I use my hands to draw. I use them to paint. I use them to write. I use them to turn the lens on my camera and to press the shutter button. I am using them to type this post. Hands as nouns. Hands as verbs. Hands as adjectives. Raise you hand to ask a question. Raise your hand to answer a question. Lend a helping hand to your neighbor. That piece is handcrafted. This piece is handmade. And what beautiful handiwork they both are.
Hands up. Hands down. Hands on. Hands off. Hands across America. Clap your hands to show appreciation. Handles open and handles close. Handle with care. I can’t handle it anymore. He is handy. I've got my hands full. One hand washes the other. Employees must wash their hands. All hands on deck. The winning hand. Hand out. Hand it over. I want to hold your hand. On the other hand...

On the Other Hand
Handbook: journey on...

A glimpse of me, sheathed in armor
Lock or key, take your choice.
An offer made is now rescinded
Break the silence, hear my voice.

Fragments of a dream you once had
Lost my bearings, such is life.
A deep regret comes to the surface
A shattered conscience pierced by strife.

In an instant, endings happen
No guarantee, you understand.
What's left is right, there's nothing to it
You find yourself on the other hand.

Second Hand
Hands down, this is one of my most favorite book projects to date...
With each page completed, I have become more and more intrigued with adding objects to book pages. Call it assemblook, perhaps...
With every new object, more and more depth is added...
And with every new page, I am learning new ways to work with and combine wood, metal, fabric and paper...
Handbook. The story continues...

Hand Made
I continue to work away on Handbook...
adding some rusty found objects...
to give it a little depth...
to tell the story of the page...
to add layers to the book...
to fill the binding...
and to spread the idea...made by hand!
